What is statehood today? What are the needs in the social interaction of individual actors to address social inequalities according to SDG 10? State systems can reduce inequalities, but also keep them stable or even expand them. In this context, the relationship between politics and civil society deserves special attention. The SDGs adopted by nation states are a good example of how different institutions of a state interact, but also how civil society can act as a critical corrective to state agendas. In the course of this, we highlight two significant world events – the COVID19 pandemic and Russia’s war of aggression on Ukraine – and discuss what possible consequences these two historical events might have on the interplay of different societal actors in the 21st century.
