Ana María Suárez Franco is a lawyer from the Universidad Javeriana and did a postgraduate course in public policies at the Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia. She holds an LLM degree from the University of Heidelberg and a doctorate from the University of Mannheim, Germany. She was recently appointed as Secretary General of FIAN International. In her former capacity as FIAN`s Permanent Representative Ana María participated as expert in the processes of elaboration of the Maastricht Principles on Extraterritorial Obligations and on the Human Rights of Future Generations, the negotiation processes of the Declaration on the Rights of Peasants, as well as in the current negotiation process towards a Binding Instrument on Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises with regard to Human Rights in Geneva. Dr. Suarez Franco has worked closely with communities affected by violations of their right to food in various regions, supporting them to use accountability mechanisms in the UN Human Rights System and the Inter-American Human Rights System. She is an invited lecturer in diverse universities in Germany, Switzerland, USA and Latin America and has participated in a number of academic publications concerning human rights.
Ana María Suarez Franco will head a workshop on the topic of „The rights of future generations“ on Saturday, November 22nd, from 2:00-3:30 pm as well as accompany the workshop “Human rights and environmental standards in a new era of globalization – perspectives for emancipatory action” on Saturday, 22nd November, 4:00-7:00pm and comment on Stephan Klingebiels keynote talk on „Democracy, authoritarianism and the future of development policy“ on Saturday, November 22nd, from 9:15-10:30 am.
