There is much talk about the crisis of democracy. Critical organizations in both North and South report that their opportunities for engagement are increasingly being curtailed. The social sciences speak of „shrinking“ or even „closing spaces“. It is becoming narrow for the freedom of expression, state and system criticism.
But increasing social inequality in particular calls for courageous counteraction through criticism and organization. This pre-event for the #webET2020 and presentation of the new book „Shrinking Spaces – More Space for Global Civil Society!
What does the phenomenon of „shrinking spaces“ mean for the struggle for equality and recognition?
How do neo-authoritarian efforts of numerous state leaderships affect the everyday work of social movements and critical NGOs?

Development policy is fundamentally linked to questions of democratic politics – this is illustrated by the 16th University Weeks on Development Policy, which Südwind Salzburg organized in cooperation with the University of Salzburg on the topic of threatened civil society, as well as the 7th Austrian Development Conference in Graz, which dealt with socio-ecological transformation. This anthology documents lectures from both development policy events, which took place in November 2017, as well as the three pre-scientific papers by students who received the „C3 Award“ in 2019, and shows the urgency of global challenges in the areas of democracy and peace policy, ecology and the global economy.
