The exhibition is aimed at young people, adults, and school classes alike.
Democracy is more than just a form of government with elections, changing administrations, and separation of powers. Compromise, dialogue, the exchange of different opinions, and participation are also part of the essence of democracy.
With exhibits and interactive stations, the interactive traveling exhibition allows visitors to discover the vitality of a democratic social system in a playful and step-by-step manner, to examine their own values, and to develop new perspectives.
The exhibition conveys various democratic values based on the concept of “inner” and “outer” spaces of democracy. In addition to exploring and examining their own inner democratic spaces, such as respect, empathy, courage, and self-confidence, visitors learn more about external democratic spaces, such as freedom of religion, freedom of the press and freedom of expression, access to education, sexual freedom, and equality. Impressive video messages from around the world offer a global perspective on the importance of democracy.
Of course, the exhibition also provides space for controversial topics, different views, and discussion: a so-called “marketplace” invites visitors to contribute and express their own opinions using interactive formats. Courageous citizens can even voice their opinions at a press conference!
The traveling exhibition, which was named Exhibition of the Year 2021 in Bremen by the taz newspaper, was conceived and developed by Saher Khanaqa-Kükelhahn as part of the AMIF “Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund.”
