Microcredits are supposed to fight poverty with the tools of finance. In Cambodia, where per-capita-debt in the microfinance sector is one of the highest in the world, this strategy is becoming extremely problematic in the context of the Covid 19 pandemic: Numerous smallholders are no longer able to repay their debts and have to sell their land. Those affected lose access to the cultivable land that is vital for them, and their right to food is violated.
The workshop will critically examine microcredit in development cooperation based on these concrete experiences from FIAN case work.
Speakers:
Lukas Schmidt (Executive Director FIAN Austria)
Mathias Pfeifer (Case Work Officer, FIAN Germany)
Organization: FIAN (FoodFirst Information and Action Network)
The workshop takes place in seminar room 120 in the building Science Park 2.
