The workshop “Sustainable tourism as an opportunity for development” offers an examination of how sustainable tourism can make a valuable contribution to the local economy and population, especially in countries of the Global South – provided that peace makes tourism possible in the first place. The aim of the workshop is to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the role of tourism in the context of sustainable development and to identify concrete approaches.
Introduction: A look into the future – Exercise: What will your vacation trip look like in 2049?
Participants are asked to outline their visions for a future vacation trip and share them with each other. During a short joint reflection, the importance of peace as a basis for every trip is emphasized.
Input “Tourism and development cooperation”
Good practice projects in the Global South are used to highlight how sustainable tourism development works and can create added value for local people. One focus is on human rights and child protection in tourism and on the presentation of specific tools that can be used to ensure respect for human rights along tourism value chains.
Discussion
Participants are encouraged to ask critical questions and identify any weaknesses and hurdles based on different scenarios. It should also become clear that sustainable tourism development is not possible without lasting peace.
Conclusion
The World Café method is used to discuss the role of travelers, the government, strong institutions and the SDGs.

Anna Kodek is project manager for sustainable tourism development & development cooperation. She has a degree in tourism, has worked in various areas of tourism for many years and has completed further training in sustainable tourism.
