The workshop, led by Sophia Stanger (Austrian Centre for Peace) and Juliana Krohn (University of Graz), is dedicated to the question of how climate justice and peace work can be linked in development policy contexts and in development cooperation. The focus will be on the presentation and critical reflection of two specific projects: EnviPeace and “Capacity Development for Humanitarian Assistance & Environmental Peacebuilding in Westafrica” (HAWA).
HAWA is a capacity development project for humanitarian actors from state authorities, civil society, the military and police in West Africa. It supports these actors in responding to crises in a coordinated, gender-responsive manner and with the help of environmental peacebuilding approaches. HAWA is coordinated by ACP, funded by Austrian Development Cooperation and supported by the Federal Ministry of Defense.
The FFG-funded project EnviPeace is dedicated to the conception of guidelines and the development of a training program in the field of environmental peacebuilding. This immersive, virtual and mixed-reality-based training is intended to prepare participants for work in conflict regions particularly affected by the planetary crisis. A central focus of the research and the resulting development of the training is the conceptualization of non-human or more-than-human aspects as actors that influence and are part of both conflict dynamics and peacebuilding efforts.
After a brief introduction to existing approaches that integrate the topics of climate justice and peace, we will work together on the following questions, among others:
- What models can I take away for my own practice?
- How much potential for peace is there in my climate/environmental projects?
- How much potential for climate/environmental justice is there in my peace work?
- How can these aspects be linked even more closely, both in terms of development policy and development cooperation?
Workshop leaders
Sophia Stanger works as a project manager and environmental peacebuilding focal point at the Austrian Center for Peace (ACP) and is a freelance trainer and facilitator. As an activist, she is committed to peace, climate, environment and feminism.
Juliana Krohn is a peace and conflict researcher at the Department of Global Governance at the University of Graz and a lecturer at the Center for Peace Research and Peace Education at the University of Klagenfurt. She is a freelance trainer and educational consultant and a member of the Transnational Steering Group of the Global Campaign for Peace Education. In her research and (educational) work, she deals with the connections between the climate crisis, peace and conflict and climate justice from a critical and decolonial perspective.
