Dora Maria Téllez is a Nicaraguan politician, historian and former Sandinista guerrilla fighter. During Nicaragua’s revolutionary government (1979-1990), she served as deputy and vice president of the Council of State and as Minister of Health.
As a historian, she has written numerous books and academic publications on the economic and social history of Nicaragua, the challenges of democracy, social movements, the marginalization of indigenous and other minorities and the development of Nicaragua’s political system. She is a member of the Academy of Geography and History in Nicaragua and a member of the Guatemalan Academy of Geography and History
In 2024, Téllez was a Visiting Fellow of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University and is a visiting professor at Tulane University. She was unable to take up a Robert F. Kennedy visiting professorship planned for the spring semester of 2025 – which had been intended for a good 20 years earlier – due to the restrictive visa policy of the USA.
Dora María Téllez will head a workshop titled „What happened to the revolution? On the authoritarian turnaround in Nicaragua“ on Saturday, November 22nd, 2:00-3:30pm as well as comment on Stephan Klingebiel’s keynote „Democracy, authoritarianism and the future of development policy“ from 9:15-10:30am.
