In May 2022, the book Sustainable Energy Access for Communities: Rethinking the Energy Agenda for Cities was released by Springer Nature. This open access publication explores the multi-faceted dimensions of transition to energy sustainability in emerging cities. The book presents the latest developments on energy access and transition to sustainability throughout the overall value chain: from basic research in universities to documentation of lessons learned in the field. The authors look into the efforts needed for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 7 and 11, and discuss the question of whether these goals’ achievement can conflict with other development goals such as decent work and economic growth. Furthermore, innovation in energy transition is introduced, both in technology and citizens’ engagement. The empirical evidence presented makes this book appealing to scholars in the field of energy sustainability as well as to policymakers and energy service companies.
The workshop is dedicated to the presentation of the SEA4cities book and will have a hybrid format:
• presential speakers and conference attendees in Linz, Austria
• speakers and other attendees connecting online through Zoom; the Zoom connection will include a simultaneous English-French interpretation.

Session Speakers:
Dr. Aminata Fall is a freelance expert on energy sustainability. She is currently supporting the development of the Africa Continental Power Systems Masterplan (CMP), a project of the African Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) implemented within the EU Global Technical Assistance Facility to the African Union. Between 2018 and 2021, Aminata coordinated the SEA4cities project for the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien). She holds a PhD on Energy Economics from TU Wien.
Prof. Reinhard Haas is Professor in Energy Economics at TU Wien. He received a M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Economics (1984), a Ph.D. (1987) and a Venia Docendi (1998) in Energy Economics from TU Wien. He is Head of the Energy Economics Group (EEG) since 1996. Reinhard has more than 30 years of teaching, supervision, examination and reviewing experience. He authored more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book contributions. He has also served as a guest editor and is an associate editor of different scientific journals. https://eeg.tuwien.ac.at
Dr. Pauline Macharia is Technical Advisor to The Energy Network (TENN), a non-profit organization focusing on ecosystem approach for powering livelihoods and healthcare facilities. She has been involved in research on the ecology of river and lake ecosystems in Kenya, specializing in water quality and environmental flows. has also been involved in various research projects on water supply and water quality assessment. Pauline holds a PhD in natural science from TU Wien. Her PhD research focused on the optimization of the Water-Energy Nexus for water supply in Africa.
Mr. Salif Sow is Manager of the Department Energy and Public Sector at Deloitte Senegal. He was employed in the SEA4Cities project as a doctorate student specialized in Physics. Salif holds a master on Energy Engineering from the Pan African Institute of Water and Energy Sciences. He is currently enrolled in a doctoral programme at the Ecole Superieure Polytechnique of Dakar, in Senegal.
